PC music has a new album that I hope gets attention. Softrock. It's ag Cook and easyfun and has writing credits from Sophie. It's no OOEPU-I 2 but it's headed toward that future pop Sophie envisioned
Sophie made some great tunes. And while I see the novel and experimental nature of them, I personally don't consider her the pioneer that some made her out to be. She did have a great vision, and the unconformity from the status quo, likely related to the fact she was autistic, gave in her favor for producing a pretty unique sounds. This vid does misrepresented some arbitrary details however, like for one she never released for PC Music, she was however considered a "pc music affiliate" which was due to her contribution on several songs by other artists, mostly producer credit alongside many others. I also think this vid downplayed the role AG Cook had in developing the new hyperpop sound. In one part of vid when contrasting the production methods of ag cook vs sophie, it was kind of a word salad, and what was describes could both be said about both. Im also baffled from some of the comments. Its tragic her life was lost, but quit living in a fairy tale people! Sophie "had an accidental slip on a rooftop while star gazing?" 🤨 Come on now, how can anyone buy that? Sophie ended her own life, lets not politicize this by attempting to preserve her legacy in leu of increased awareness of su1cide. It's sad, but she either did it purposefully, or was so intoxicated and negligent that she allowed it to happen. Get real guys.
It definitely sounds weird, but when i got into rather old school music, and especially after 2016 music legends dying and life long fans mourning, i wondered who that will be for me. To actively be sad about the passing of someone who you followed while they were alive. For me, that first person was Sophie. I was in disbelief when i saw an Insta post sharing the news, just to come towards that it was actually the case. Sophie was someone special, i dont think that i would enjoy this kind of music from anyone else. The difference with those legends is that her life was taken way too soon, way too quickly. That is the tragedy. Her album sounds more modern and fresh than the chart music now, which every year seems to grow more and more bland, bad in not even a good way.
this is an extraordinary documentary that has really sent me down a beautiful rabbit hole thank you for making it and even more, thanks to all the artists mentioned directly or tangentially I'm so honored to be even one tiny link in the giant chain of human music, it's just so cool and amazing what we've accomplished sonically and emotionally as a species
I live in Athens and when I woke up to check my socials I saw a bunch of stories reposted asking desperately for blood donors for the same emergency. A couple of hours later her passing made headlines, I didn't know her that well back then but the more I learnt the more devastated I became. To be honest the people she hang with in Greece are not the best there are. I can't help but think of it sometimes, that they all wanted their 15 minutes of fame because of being associated with her. Her former partner Jeff Montana who is shown on the Grammy nominations video is arguably a horrible person so I can only imagine what she was going through before breaking up with them. Sometimes I can't help but wonder why such an exceptional artist was drawn to such superficial hollow people…
British people telling the world they invented something always contains lies. I love Sopie's music n all dat, but c'mon IT'S ANIME THEME MUSIC or some derivate of J/K-Pop at worst.
You just BLEW my mind. I loved “Hey QT” when I was in college and never quite understood what it was or where it went. Then years later I fell in love with Sophie (late) when pitchfork named her debut one of the best albums of 2018. Thanks to this video I know now I loved Sophie was before I knew I loved them!
Face shopping is the first song I heard by Sophie and I remember when I first heard it, it almost felt like looking at the sun directly. It was like my ears couldn't process what it was taking, to the point of kneejerk discomfort. It really can't be understated that Sophie was at the forefront of pop music. Idk how to describe how transcendent that song isb to me.
Found this channel the other day after rinsing PJ Harvey's Rid Of Me for the first time in years. Then watched the one on The Holy Bible, as the Manics were my first favourite band. I was at that Glasto performance and it's still one of the most intense things I've seen. Much more than the gigs after Richey had got out of hospital. But anyways, I thought both videos were really interesting and well researched, so I checked out this one as I didn't think I'd ever come across Sophie. As it turns out, I had vaguely heard a few things about her, and turns out I know the singer of the QT single. Small world. And Sophie's was a very different one to the Manics and PJ's (sonically at least), but I really enjoyed learning about her, and her music is great. Sad to hear of her untimely passing, and makes outlining the significance of her career here, even more important. So thanks very much Trash Theory for the videos. If I could humbly suggest a pick for another one, it would be Mica Levi/Micachu who is by far the most interesting musician to come out of the UK in recent years imho. Cheers
This video is criminally under observed. SOPHIE put her print across music in the US and changed things up for the better! I will always cherish stumbling across product in the corners of the internet when it was all that you could get your hands on. Somewhere SOPHIE will always be making music and inspiring us to be as bold and true as we know that we are deep down.
I already heard Vroom Vroom and Bitch I'm Madonna a long time ago, not knowing she produced the tracks. Absolutely loved Vroom Vroom. After her passing, I looked her up and found OOEPUI, and later PRODUCT. I love both albums so much that they changed my taste in music to just SOPHIE, basically. Don't even get me started of the OOEPUI nonstop remix album. Then I continuously found more of her: Nothing More to Say & Eeehhh, Charli XCX's Bounce, Vince Staples' Yeah Right, Arca's La Chíqui, Le1f's Koi, samples from Soundcloud. My Spotify Wrapped top 5 consisted entirely of SOPHIE tracks. Safe to say I'm a little obsessed now.

Sophie is NOT maximalist. That’s just wrong. It’s minimalist. She doesn’t use any filler or white noise electronic sounds like most pop songs
